The Congress will be held in the Design Centre, the biggest and most modern convention venue in Linz. The fact that the plenary hall and the meeting rooms of the working groups will be close to each other should guarantee a smooth progress of the Congress, enable participants wishing to do so to switch between working groups and to entertain an exchange of ideas during coffee breaks and luncheons in an agreeable atmosphere.
Linz is only a small metropolis. For this reason, some of the hotels where we have rooms reserved for participants in the FIDE Congress of 2008 are within walking distance of the Design Centre. Other hotels are easily and speedily accessible by public transportation.
Upper Austria, with its capital Linz, is one of the most beautiful regions of Austria. We hope to be able to show you, in the context of the social programme of the Congress and of the programme for accompanying persons, at least a small part of it.
The centre stage is of course taken by the professional programme. The topics to be dealt with at the Congress and the persons who have taken over the function of General Rapporteurs, should guarantee discussions that will be profitable and exciting both for academics and practitioners.
